Classifications of Fires:

5.2.1 Class A Fires

  Class A fires are fires in ordinary combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics

5.2.2 Class B Fires

  Class B fires are fires in flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases

5.2.3 Class C Fires

  Class C fires are fires that involve energized electrical equipment

5.2.4 Class D Fires

  Class D fires are fires in combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium, lithium, and potassium

5.2.5 Class K Fires

  Class K fires are fires in cooking appliances that involve combustible cooking media (vegetable or animals oils and fats)



  Shall be readily accessible and immediately available when a fire


  Shall be located along normal paths of travel, including exits

Visual Obstructions


  Shall not be obstructed or obscured from view



  Shall not be exposed to temp. outside the listed temp. range

Installation Height


  Gross weight not exceeding 40lb (18.14kg), shall be installed not more than 5ft (1.53m) above the floor


  Gross weight greater than 40lb (18.14kg), (except wheeled types) shall be installed not more than 3.5ft (1.07m) above the floor


  Fire extinguisher bottom and floor shall be clearance 4 inches (102mm)

Section 7.2.1

  Visually inspected monthly at a minimum of 30 day

Inspection Procedures

Section 7.2.2

  Periodic or electronic monitoring shall check at least the following items:

  1. Location in a designated place
  2. No obstruction to access or visibility
  3. Indicator in range or position
  4. Determined by weighting or hefting
  5. Tires, wheels, carriage, hose, and nozzle good condition
  6. Non-rechargeable push-to-test


Section 7.3.4* 

Annual Maintenance Record Keeping


The tag or label, as a minimum, shall identify the following:

  1. Month and year maintenance was performed
  2. Person performing the work
  3. Name of the agency performing the work

Hydrostatic Testing

Hydrostatic test intervals for Extinguishers maximum of 5 years, following the chart
